Priorities
Some of the synonyms for purpose are: intention, resolution, determination, intentionality. Others are aim, dream, goal, objective, ambition. These could be in every part of your life. For your relationship with God, marriage, family, career, ministry. It is always good to operate from priorities. I have always tried to be conscious of this scripture. “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” (Prov. 16.9)
As I reflect on the Psalm, it is apparent that God wants to grant us our heart’s desires. I would suggest that these should and must be in line with his will found in his word. And it also states that he desires to fulfill all our purpose. So, the question really comes down to this, what do you believe your purpose is for your time here on earth? As we discussed above, they can be multi-faceted. But I would suggest that there is one primary overriding purpose that God intended for you and me by giving us human life and a new life in Christ.
Finding purpose
So, Bill how do we find out what is our purpose? I would say you start with analyzing your spiritual and natural gifts. What gives you pleasure and what do you think would give God the most pleasure by using your gifts? Where is God opening doors for you along the way? What is he sharing with you through his word and prayer and the counsel of others, beginning with your spouse and your own family?
It may be immediately clear, or it may require an extended time to see his purpose for you to be most fruitful. I’ve experienced both along the way. Trust him! “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.” (Psa. 57.2) There is much joy in fulfilling your purpose.
