Our Stronghold!

Be the Dad

Have you ever really thought about God being your stronghold? So, what is a stronghold? Oxford Dictionary indicates that it is a place that has been fortified so as to protect it against attack. Similarly, it is a fortress, fort, castle, citadel, garrison or bunker. The Dictionary goes on to say it is a place where a particular cause or belief is strongly defended or upheld.

Joanne and I recently watched a program about the bunkers that were built during the atomic bomb threats from Russia, the later nuclear bomb threats and the 9-11 attack on the twin towers in New York. And most specifically, the one underground at Greenbrier, the beautiful resort in West Virginia. It was built for our governmental leaders in Congress to go to in case of these severe attacks on our country. When we visited Greenbrier years ago, the secret bunker had been made public and we were able to visit it. Quite secure and elaborately furnished.

The Psalmist ends with this assurance in verse 40. “The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.” A cave could be a stronghold. David would’ve been acquainted with that as he had fled from his enemies, even his son, Absalom.

As you can see in these two verses, the Lord is the believer’s salvation, stronghold in the time of trouble, our deliverer from the wicked and he is our refuge. Should this not make us secure in our faith in the One who is all this and more? Whatever you are facing or will face, put your trust in your Stronghold. You are eternally secure.
