What you missed…
Smokey John Reaves can really bring it, and bring it he did at the last Fathers Forum. I guess he felt at home since he was speaking to an eager crowd of dads at his restaurant, all feasting on his delicious BBQ! His overall challenge to us was: “Are you spending or investing your time?” Great question, especially as it applies to us men who have been ordained to invest in/disciple our wives and children.
Smokey had an older ‘white man’ invest in him as a mentor for a number of years. I’d say it reaped great benefits. Wisdom came pouring out for the entire hour. One thing that impacted me was his counsel and challenge of how to pray for our family. Don’t pray that God will deliver them from their circumstances, make their life better…but thank God, praise Him for their circumstances, that He has allowed them to be in their situation, so that they will have a profound testimony of God’s grace that carried them through whatever they were/are facing. “Giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Eph. 5.20) All things!!!
At one point in his life, Smokey John felt called to shut down his profitable night clubs and trust in the Lord to provide. Since then, God has not only blessed John financially, but has opened doors for him to point many men to the Lord. His testimony of God’s grace was amazing.
So, what are your kids, wife, family, you experiencing right now? Do you trust the Lord enough to, by faith, praise Him in all circumstances? Seriously! Smokey will tell you that it will change your perspective on prayer and His sufficiency when you see Him doing what only He can do. It is a ‘trust factor’! But you cannot do this alone. You need mentors in your life. Your family needs you to mentor them as you are being mentored.
