What’s your business?

Be the Dad

These were the words of a 12-year-old in Jerusalem at an annual Feast. Of course, it wasn’t just any 12-year-old, it was Jesus. He was answering his parents because he had stayed behind in the temple with the teachers of the day. After three days of travel, they were very nervous that they couldn’t find him. One might say that he was disobedient to his earthly parents. You might say it, but I won’t. I believe by now, Mary and Joseph should’ve known enough about him to not be worried. But, parents will be parents.

I personally trusted Jesus as my Savior at 12 years of age. While a few things might’ve changed in my life, I certainly wasn’t about my heavenly Father’s business. But something happened similar to Jesus being baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit at 30. In my early 30’s, I had an awakening from the Spirit and from that time, God’s business has been ever increasing in my life. I’m not comparing myself to Jesus, but it is interesting as I reflected on this, how the age was similar.

But what I want to address is…am I, are you, about our heavenly Father’s business? In our home, at work, our recreation, at church, possibly in a ministry, wherever? There would be no argument that the ensuing three years after Jesus’ baptism, he was all in concerning his Father’s business. He was teaching, witnessing, praying, mentoring, healing, calling, challenging, correcting; and yes, even dying. And his Father’s business is to expand his kingdom in the hearts and minds of men, women and children, making disciples for the gospel.

So, I want to challenge us to meditate on this and reflect on how we are, or are not, about God’s business in our everyday life. What needs to be changed, or what am I doing that is in line with his kingdom purpose? His last words to his disciples as recorded in Matthew 28.18-20, and now to us is… go to all the world and as you’re going, make disciples!
