The Presence of Absence

©2025 | Dr. Rafael (Rafy) Gutierrez | Website

It remains true that “an absentee father is the number one problem in life in America.” Nearly every social issue in our society can be linked to fatherlessness. In his 1995 book, David Blankenhorn wrote: “Fatherlessness is the most harmful demographic trend of this generation. It is the leading cause of declining child well-being in our society.1

Strong words! However, the issue goes beyond that. Blankerhorn elaborates that “we face a cultural loss that affects every home.” He emphasizes that “the most significant absence our society must confront is not merely the absence of fathers but rather the absence of our belief in fathers”.2 We are encountering a reality where the role of men as fathers has been “unsung, unpraised, and unnoticed3.

The culture of father absence, along with the widespread belief that fathers are unnecessary or even harmful, has distanced men from the heart of the family. This perception has become accepted and normalized in society.

Various organizations and government agencies have studied the effects of a father’s absence. However, statistics alone—like the ones presented below—are just numbers unless a concrete plan is implemented to address and transform the culture surrounding the father’s absence. We need to move towards a Christ-centered and biblical understanding of fatherhood.

Let’s review some of those statistics:

According to the National Fatherhood Initiative, Father Facts Ninth Edition, In 2023, 24.1% of children in the United States (17.8 million) lived in a home without a father present (i.e., without a biological, step, or adoptive father). The proportion of these children varied by race or ethnicity. Specifically,

  • 19.6% of White children (10 million) lived without a father present.
  • 47.5% of Black children (5.3 million) lived without a father present.
  • 28.8% of Hispanic children (5.4 million) lived without a father present.

As listed by The Fatherless Generations4,

  • 85% of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes – 20 times the average. (Center for Disease Control)
  • 70% of youths in state-operated institutions come from fatherless homes – 9 times the average. (U.S. Dept. of Justice).
  • 71% of pregnant teenagers lack a father. [U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
  • 90% of homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes. [US D.H.H.S., Bureau of the Census]
  • 71% of high school dropouts come from fatherless homes. [National Principals Association Report on the State of High Schools]

There are many frightening statistics regarding the impact of fatherlessness, and most of them have been known for decades. It is a disturbing silent crisis that affects not only our nation but the entire world.

As I mentioned earlier, statistics are just numbers unless we implement a work plan to change the culture surrounding absent fathers. We must move toward Christ-centered and Biblical fatherhood, which is precisely the mission of Abiding Fathers!

James, the half-brother of Christ, wrote: “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled,’ without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also, faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:14-17).

Let’s put our faith into action! Join us in a worldwide mission to equip men to be Christ-centered fathers. Let’s provide fathers with the “clothes” of Christ and nourish them with God’s word. How can you help?
