Seeds
Most of us have at one time bought a packet of flower or vegetable seeds for planting. All of them are very tiny and produce relatively small products. Some people even spread wildflower seeds along roadways for beautification. I have always been amazed that some tiny dead dry seed can actually produce a living plant when properly planted and cared for. God’s creation at work.
Here in this parable, Jesus makes a profound illustration and statement. First, the mustard seed is tiny, but grows into a tree with many branches, providing shade and places for birds to nest. And he compares the mustard seed to faith. And says that a mountain he and the disciples are looking at could be moved from one place to another if their faith in God was only as large as the tiny seed. Have you ever tried to shove a mountain to a different location? Me either.
Faith
Jesus set a task that would be humanly impossible. He’s trying to show that we are to exercise our faith in his truth and promises in order that he may move the mountain. “But with God all things are possible” (Mt. 19.26). I think he was also showing us that we should dream and pray the impossible for his glory. “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to him” (2 Chron. 16.9).
By faith you are saved, and by faith you are created and prepared beforehand in Christ Jesus for good works. And through your faith, God, who is Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omnipresent will do the impossible. Let’s go move some mountains!!
