How Welfare Affects the Family

A social effort

Welfare…is a merciful part of any society. The dictionary defines it this way. The health, happiness, and fortunes of a person or group. Statutory procedure or social effort designed to promote the basic physical and material well-being of people in need. Financial support given to people in need.

The operative phrase is ‘in need’. In America today, growing rapidly since The Great Society was instituted several decades ago, the system has been turned up on its ears. What started out to be benevolence for those with a real need has turned into a welfare system creating dependency on the government, in many cases, without a need being present. The system pays out more if the father is absent, contributing to the destruction of the family unit for millions of children. It has essentially become a license to have millions of children without the support of a father. A large number of babies are now being born into a single parent home.

Uncle Sam

The government has become the woman’s husband and the child’s father! But let me name a few things “Uncle Sam” cannot do. Add yours.

Hold the child when they are hurting

Tuck them in bed and pray with them

Put a bandaid on an ‘ouchie’

Love their mother

Teach them to throw and catch a ball

Tell a son that he ‘has what it takes’

Tell a daughter that ‘she is lovely’

How to ride a bike, roller skate, dance

Have date nights with them

Teach them right from wrong

Provide discipline to help them be safe and obedient

Love them, bless them, encourage them, shelter them

Take them to their first day at school

Show up at their events

Give hugs and kisses

Be their best man and father of the bride

Love on their children, your grandchildren

Demonstrate the attributes of their Heavenly Father

Read the Bible with them, even share the gospel

Simply, be their dad…on purpose!

You get the picture. The welfare check and food stamps will never, ever replace a dad. The welfare system in this country is broke. It is ‘enslaving’ people for the sake of control and power with absolutely zero concern for the childrens’ lives they are destroying. NOW is the time to take back the family. It is the very heart and soul of any nation, ours in particular. Men who produce babies need to step up and do the right thing-stay in their lives and love them as only they can. These children need their dad, YOU!!!

Re-engage

In James 1:27a it is said; “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble…” The term ‘visit’ means that the Church would seek to understand the needs of those who are in trouble so that the need could be met. And that’s what abiding fathers do. Be concerned about their spiritual well-being as much as their physical. And don’t rely on a distant relative, “Uncle Sam”, to do your job. Re-engage and rejoice over the results. They are countless. Much better than a welfare check!

I might add; for those dads who are right now saying, “that’s not me”; examine your fathering habits to make sure you are not playing the “Uncle” role in their lives. Be the dad! Know what I mean, Verne?
