Be keenly watchful

To be vigilant is to be watchful or alert for danger or some other kind of trouble. You might even say it is “being keenly watchful to detect danger”. Peter is warning the church about the enemy of enemies to every believer. To deny this is very naïve and dangerous. He goes on to be specific. “Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Devour is not a kind word. Have you ever witnessed a hungry lion ripping into his prey? It is not a pretty sight.

But he does not always use evil means. He often will use subtle and not so obvious ways. Our two Directors in Rwanda are doing an incredible work getting the ministry started in their country. They are not being attacked by armed militia, but encountering various forms of discouragement, even from those close to them. This nation went through a genocide in 1994 where one million men were killed. The older generation was massacred. Our men see the message of Abiding Fathers as the opportunity to strengthen and rebuild the family and their nation through Godly fathers.

Shield of faith

Do you think this is pleasing to Satan? NO!! But we have the armor that can withstand all the fiery darts, the shield of faith. Peter exhorts us to “resist him, firm in your faith.” And even if we must suffer for the gospel, “the God of all grace will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you”. We have an Advocate in Christ Jesus. He knows all about trials, temptations, sufferings. He wrote the Book on it. And he has once and for all defeated our enemy at Golgotha. In the meantime, be vigilant, be watchful.
